Earthenware

Do you know about Nevers Earthenware? A real emblem of the town, Earthenware appeared in Nevers at the end of the 16th century. Today there are workshops that continue the tradition by creating ancient, but also very contemporary, designs and shapes

Arriving from Italy at the invitation of Duke Louis de Gonzague, the first earthenware potters settled in Nevers at the end of the 16th century. Their reputation and success became such that Nevers was known in the 17th century as the French Capital of Earthenware. Of the twelve factories that were to be found in the town in the 18th century, only one survived the economic difficulties of the 19th. Today five workshops continue the art of earthenware in Nevers
